Psychoeducational/Academic Assessments
Are you or your child having difficulty with learning or academic achievement. This can be difficult to hear and many times it is tempting to sit up back and hope that these issues will go away. However, if an academic, psychoeducational, or neuropsychological assessment has been recommended, the sooner the underlying issues are uncovered the faster you or your child can move toward achieving their full potential and possibly making significant gains. We all learn differently. Some are able to find a way to thrive in a traditional classroom setting, but others have more difficulty. Whether it’s struggles with reading and language or having a hard time with math and numbers, it’s essential to understand the way you or child learns and develop strategies to overcome areas of struggle by maximizing learning strengths. That’s where a psychoeducational assessment comes in. While the name sounds complicated, it’s simply a battery of tests used to help people develop better academic skills and resources. A comprehensive assessment is also needed to determine if you or child may qualify for accommodations like extra test/assignment time, a note taker, removal of a class requirement, or other accommodations. What Is Psychoeducational Testing?
Simply, psychoeducational testing is a form of psychological assessment that focuses on how they access and breakdown information to learn. By assessing these areas, I’m able to help my clients, parents, and educators develop learning strategies and resources to help them achieve their greatest level of academic success. Whether the assessments are administered to increase self-awareness or as part of a larger academic resource plan, psychoeducational testing provides a solid knowledge base to work from.
Reasons to Schedule Psychoeducational Assessment
Curiosity about learning strengths and weaknesses, concerns about your or a child’s academic struggles, or needing a psychoeducational assessment as part of a larger academic support plan, are all common reasons to seek a psychoeducational assessment. In general, this type of assessment battery is geared toward answering questions like:
- How do I learn best?
- What subjects do I struggle to understand?
- What academic areas come easily to me?
- Are cognitive impairments or developmental differences contributing to academic struggles?
- Is lack of attention and focus, hyperactivity, or disorganization a factor in my learning difficulties?
What Happens During Psychoeducational Testing?
Psychoeducational assessments are usually conducted over the course of several sessions. The exact number and length of sessions depends on the age of the person completing the tests and the reasons for the assessments. I provide comprehensive and personalized testing batteries. This may include a range of assessment methods, including:
- Clinical interviews – during clinical interviewing I speak to individuals, parents and/or children, reviewing health history, behavioral background, academic records, emotional and cognitive health and therapy records, and other information that may factor into academic ability.
- Rating scales – these are questionnaires filled out by the client, parents, and educators. They ask for responders to provide a rating for the level, severity, or frequency of specific symptoms or behaviors related to learning differences.
- Observation – when necessary or possible, I get feedback from a teacher on a learner in a classroom setting. I also observe them in the office performing various academic functions.
- Paper or computer-based testing – a comprehensive testing battery that may include intelligence, aptitude, attentiveness, and cognitive assessments.
Following the completion of a comprehensive assessment, I carefully evaluate all findings and write a report. During the final session, we review the report together, so I can answer any questions and provide additional feedback and resources.
